Lot 2941
Constantius II, as Caesar, 324-337. Follis (Bronze, 16 mm, 1.78 g, 6 h), a contemporary imitation of an issue from Treveri. Uncertain mint in Gaul (?), circa 333-340 (?). Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Constantius II to left. Rev. CONSTAN/TIVS / CAESAR / PTR in four lines; above, star. Cf. RIC 490 (for prototype). M. Harlick: Anepigraphic bronze coins of Constantine and family, in: The Celator 21 (2007), fig. 21. Zschucke 2002, 15.11. Somewhat rough, otherwise, good very fine.

From the collection of Dr. L. Ramskold, ex Vecchi 15, 15 June 1999, 1183.

The unofficial imitations of dynastic bronzes copied Rome and Trier in about equal numbers. Surprisingly, the Trier imitations were apparently produced some ten years after the original emission (see lot 2943 below). Ramskold's database includes just over 100 such dynastic imitations with Trier mint marks.
